How to use these guides

Every guide here answers the same question in a different category: what separates a product worth owning from one that merely looks like it on a spec sheet. They are written to be read before you shop, not while standing in an aisle, because the useful decisions happen earlier than that.

Each one covers the specs that genuinely change the result, the specs that exist to be printed on a box, the parts that fail first, and what a fair price looks like at each tier. The pricing sections are worth reading twice. Knowing that a mid-range robot vacuum lists at $400 and sells at $250 turns a "40 percent off" banner from a persuasion into a number you are able to check.

Read these two first

Two guides apply to everything else on this page. How to spot a real deal covers the reference-price tricks, the derivative model numbers sold at a single retailer, and the total-cost items that sit outside the sticker. The best time to buy anything covers the retail calendar and why grills drop in September and televisions in February, neither of which has anything to do with a holiday.

Together they answer the two questions that decide whether a purchase was good: is this price genuinely low, and is this the month it gets lower.

What we do not do here

These guides do not rank products or name a single best pick. Best depends on your floors, your budget, your household, and what broke last time, and a guide that pretends otherwise is selling something. What we give you instead is the reasoning, so the choice holds up after the specific model in any roundup is discontinued.

No brand pays to appear in a guide and no placement is for sale. We earn affiliate commissions on some links at no cost to you, explained in full in our affiliate disclosure, and that does not influence what these guides say.
